Waterlight
‘Waterlight’ by Daan Roosegaarde is a combination of awareness and a dreamscape. Technology, experience and perception provide visitors with a virtual flood.
The Waterlight artwork consists of wavy lines across an area of ten acres. When walking on a dike the lines of light are perceived as high water, and once you are in the flood control channel you will find yourself in an underwater world. Visitors describe Waterlight as “the Northern Light of the Netherlands”.
Waterlight is the result of a collaboration between Studio Roosegaarde and the Rhine and IJssel water boards. Chairman Hein Pieper: “In this project you will have a bit of an experience of what the Netherlands would look like without any dikes. Then you’ll realise how important it is to maintain our dikes.” The next few years Waterlight will be appear in various places in the Netherlands.
The designs by Daan Roosegaarde play with the boundaries between man, technology and space. Interaction, technological innovation and beauty are central to what he describes as ‘techno-poetry’.
