Workshop: Staging the Message – Strategy, Method and Language Use
6-8 August 2015
Location: Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art
“This workshop offers the participants theoretical and practical tools for an editorial approach of visual production. It concentrates on the diversity of means of the ‘journalistic’ tradition of design in media that further complex and argumentative forms of communication and foregrounds the constructed nature of messages in order to solicit an active interpretation by the viewer/reader.
The emphasis is on the potentialities and richness of the ‘reflective’ or ‘dialectic’ method, trying to recuperate the specificity of its projective and emancipatory practice. Taking the social workings of the message as a starting point the workshop focuses on the editing and making process, introducing a method which structures the collecting and editing of information in a way that lays the foundation for the staging, the mise-en-scène of fact and vision to the multiple sensory tracks of the visual.”
The working process included collecting an archive of visual evidences, analyzing, editing and shaping the visual material into a message. The participants looked at the visual representation from the perspective of personal as well as collective experience. They recognized and re-thought the conventional ways of visual representation and communication, treating these notions as capable to create meanings instead of remaining at the level of aesthetical objects.
