One Week About Photography door Ahmed Polat

When I first saw ‘Arab on his horse’ from the series ‘Clever eyes’ in 2011, I was immediately drawn to her approach of somewhat spiritual intent. I was curious to find out what stirred that urgency.

Lana was the first name on my list but because of our busy schedules her interview ended up being the last one of this week. I’m running late to catch my flight, but this is the only time Lana and I can finally make the call and talk.

“How are we going to do this?” she asks. I sit down at my terminal and open my laptop: “We have 15 minutes, so let’s just begin.” She starts telling me about printing her latest work, for UNSEEN. “With big prints of 190 x 120 cm you need to look at a lot more details. It’s a hard task.”

After a difficult period in her work and personal life she pushed herself to go into the studio and just do something. It didn’t matter what would come out of it. Building card houses was just something to get her started, but halfway through she realised that documenting these card houses over and over again was similar to her life.

“Why should we be afraid or even ashamed to show our failures. I mean, it sounds cliche, but after breaking up and moving back to my parents’ house I felt ashamed and a failure. But it’s fine to fail.”

Her work will be shown with lhGWR at UNSEEN on 23 September.
