ONE WEEK ABOUT Fashion & Textile

By 01-08-2016

Introducing Lilian Driessen (1966). I am a creative director and clothing and interior designer with 28 years of experience in the international fashion industry, of which 16 years in the luxury segment. I graduated in 1988 at the Fashion Department of the Hogeschool van de Kunsten Arnhem. Since 2009 I operate fully independently as a (fashion) design consultant and designer of various niche luxury perfume stores all around the world. I am also the owner and founder of Atelier MariaLux.

“Destiny itself is like a wonderful wide tapestry in which every thread is guided by an unspeakable tender hand, placed beside another thread and held and carried by a hundred others.”― Rainer Maria Rilke

After working for almost 30 years, I feel that “the making of a tapestry” is the perfect metaphor for my competence and craft as a designer. Tapestries combine fundamental basic functionality with decoration, connect method to intuition. With life becoming global and public, have privacy and intimacy not become the highest goods?

The practice of making and my personal experience within it during a fully organic design and crafting process are an intrinsic part of the character and soul of the final product.

The gesture of making tapestry knows great minimalism and sobriety. Every endlessly repeated hand movement has its own unique result. ‘As in a tapestry’, I include every intention, interaction, motivation, every color, every body, every action and reaction, every piece of physical reality and the thoughts it engenders, every connection made. Every possible thing ever is woven into that limitless sprawling web and intuitively I leave out what is unnecessary in order to open myself up to other possibilities.
