ONE WEEK ABOUT WOTH Wonderful Things Magazine

By 29-08-2016

Introducing Mary Hessing – former editor of Eigen Huis & Interieur and More Than Classic. Together with her husband Toon Lauwen, she founded WOTH Wonderful Things Magazine.

WOTH, what is that?
WOTH Wonderful Things Magazine is a new magazine about design-interior-leisure which in September will appear for the first time in a Dutch and an English edition. This week, we will tell you all about the how and why of an independent magazine on paper, in a market characterized by various people as ‘a struggle’.

It all began in the cold spring in the Van Galenstraat in The Hague. I had bought a ‘new’ refurbished Mac and was pondering on how to deal with the painful situation of my dismissal (and of the whole editorial board) of Eigen Huis & Interieur by thinking up something new and positive. We live and work in an old milk factory which we renovated in 2005 and which is so spacious that we automatically started using it for a lot of other things: photo shoots, private dining and once a year, during Designkwartier The Hague, a department store with stuff we like. Much of it is design and Dutch, but they are often the things that we just love to see. One condition: Quality first! That event was already called WOTH.

I knew almost immediately after my dismissal that I wanted to set up my own magazine. Finally I could work out the plans that used to disappear in an obscure drawer of the large publishing for myself. The flip side and the beauty of all this is that I have always relied on people. On my own editors, on the comments of readers and on the many fruitful relationships with designers, creatives and brands.

WOTH Wonderful Things Magazine is about real people. People like us who like beautiful things, who are not superficial, who lead creative lives, who can’t stop making things themselves. It shows how we live (it’s no coincidence that our house features in the first issue), what we feel passionate about, which cities we visit. WOTH is full of interviews, beautiful photos, insiders’ tips and personal stories.
