One Week About Fashion & Textile by Lilian Driessen

Sunna Örlygsdóttir (1988) was born in Reykjavík. She graduated in fashion design from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2012. After various internships in Paris (Rue du Mail), Amsterdam (Atelier MariaLux) and Reykjavík (STEiNUNN), she set her aim at the ArtEZ Fashion Masters, a program from which she has just graduated.

What happens when I spend one year and ten days in solitude? What do I bring and how do I choose? How do I deal with the limitations of this scenario? Will it give me freedom to be so far away from fashion and the gaze of others? How do I dress when I only dress for myself?

These garments are the manifestation of Sunna’s stay in the middle of nowhere – albeit an imaginary nowhere. This is how she imagined spending her days in her own company, making garments all by herself for her own amusement, to serve her changing needs and desires. Exploring the possibilities of the contents of her travel trunk. And without worrying about whether she will fail or succeed in her attempts. Because what does it matter when nobody else is watching? Would she manage to escape fashion?

This collection is fundamentally a wardrobe – reflecting at once a sense of immediacy and indulgence. Objects transformed bearing witness to the state of mind of the wearer.
