ONE WEEK ABOUT Designers from Rotterdam by Lucas Verweij – Designplatform Rotterdam

There are few designers who walk the other way when the spotlights are turned on. They much rather stay in their studio than give interviews. Many designers may say so, but most of them don’t mean it. There are few designers who can concentrate so intensely on the process of creating, on a kind of material or a manufacturing method that they do not even answer the phone when they’re working.

Vincent de Rijk is one of them. Anyone who has worked with him praises him for his exceptional sense of quality and his determination. He goes his own way, which rarely leads across red carpets. For years he has been working on a series of ceramic bowls, dishes, cups and plates with a mathematically precise display. For years he has been working on the connection between plastic and ceramics, which is – as all insiders know – extremely complicated. For years, he has been making scale models for top architects. His extreme material control. His extreme material control enables him to also produce furniture. Usually made to measure. You will not be surprised to hear that he is a nice man.
