ONE WEEK ABOUT Kaboom Animation Festival
The annual Kaboom Animation Festival – this year from 21 to 30 March in Utrecht, Amsterdam and online – presents the latest, most creative, innovative and daring (inter)national animation productions. Over the next few days, we show some of the Dutch participants, today Michael Hauwert.
Michael Hauwert
Michael Hauwert makes films about highly personal, universal insecurities and fears. Recently graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2024, he strives to create empathic understanding in his films: a connection between people through mutual understanding of inner struggles – always seeking a balance between the personal and the broader context.
For example, in his graduation film “yet only here I am home,” he balances the personal with the social by reflecting on the insecurity of himself and others: do second-generation Dutch with a migration background feel at home in the Netherlands? Using anecdotes, external insecurities and discharging conversations, his film shows how being treated as the Other each time becomes internalized. How do we still find the space to be able to utter the words: but only here am I at home?
