Sometimes I am fourteen

Winner DuPho. SO Student Award 2025

In ‘Sometimes I am fourteen’ I explore the relationship between my eight-year-younger brother Lawrence and I. Lawrence and I understand each other, speak the same language, with and without words. Because we share our lives and our childhood. Because we are both artists.

The trust and close bond we share retains its strength when I hold my camera between the two of us. By documenting Lawrence’s transition into adolescence, I simultaneously reflect on my own childhood memories. The project touches on universal themes of growing up and self-discovery.

With my work I want to capture what is important right now: connection. In these times of distrust, misunderstanding of each other and increasing divisions in society, I want to create a counter movement with my work. Showing that we are all connected, that we are all human and essentially the same.

In my work I focus on the bond between me and the person in front of my camera. This is what fascinates me, that connection. This relationship is always the foundation and starting point of my projects. The silent, intimate moment that I photograph in my work as a statement against that division.

From the jury report
‘Eliza-Sophie captures her little brother’s coming-of-age and in the process relives her own childhood. The series is intimate, vulnerable and loving. You feel the peace and closeness in the images. The in-between moments, normally lost, become visible here. The work is poetic and realistic at the same time, aesthetically strong. For a student, this is a powerful portfolio, diverse in compositions and with a clear signature.’
