With a heavy dose of humor, intimacy and playfulness, photographer Pixy Liao (Shanghai, 1979) gives a quirky twist to the theme of love and relationships. Together with her partner Takahiro Morooka (Moro), she is at the heart of her long-running project Experimental Relationship, in which the world is their stage. Whether they are at home or far from home, Pixy captures their relationship in stimulating, disarming images in which she herself is in control.

Liao’s work makes you think: about gender roles, power relations and cultural expectations. She effortlessly reverses traditional roles – he lies, she stands; him naked, her dressed; she behind the camera, he in front. Her work opens up a world of possibilities in which things can be different. And exactly that is what makes it so liberating and inspiring.

Concept
For this colorful exhibition at Museum More, we joined forces with curator Sito Rozema. From an optimistic and open atmosphere came a design that fully serves Pixy’s cheerful imagery. The space feels light, warm and free – just like the photographs themselves. The result is a sparkling whole in which, as a visitor, you briefly step into the world of Pixy and Moro.

What did we create?
The exhibition is constructed as a visual dream world. Custom wallpaper prints inspired by the colors and shapes in Pixy’s work bring the walls to life. Bright colors and graphic layers enhance the images and turn the space into a joyful, intimate cocoon where everything makes sense.

The exhibition opens with a colorful title in playful, easy-to-read typography that perfectly matches the tone of the work. Scattered throughout the space you will hear music by Pimo, the musical duo of Pixy and Moro. As the icing on the cake, the exhibition closes with two red cinema chairs, where you can watch their homemade music video together. A wonderful moment of peace, love and humor to round out your visit.

Sparkles
Experimental Relationship is an ode to love on its own terms. Full of quirky images, funny twists and tender rebellion. It’s a warm invitation to look differently at yourself – with a wink, an open heart and maybe even a new perspective on your own relationship.
