‘me myself and i’ and ‘bodies’

Nominee DuPho. SO Award 2023

Bonnita Postma is an Amsterdam-based photographer/artist. Her work explores themes of identity, gender, intimacy and her position as a woman.

In her series ‘me myself and i’, she constructs assemblages of new faces from found portrait photographs from different periods, new portraits of people whose identity is not bound by stereotypes such as gender, age or color. By then photographing the assembled portraits, she transcends the collage and brings the portrait back to its original form.

In her series ‘bodies’, she explores intimacy and the relationship with our bodies, in a world that is increasingly degrading, and at the same time versexualizing, and in which the relationship between men and women is shifting after #metoo. The collages consist of crudely cut fragments from vintage 60s/70s porn books, in which the body is not yet malleable. Hands, arms, legs and body parts enter into a surreal relationship with each other. By then photographing the college image, the boundary between reality and image blurs.
