Chris Ruhe (1976) was born in Rotterdam but trained as a furniture maker at the HMC (Wood and Furniture College) in Amsterdam.
Chris: “Initially, it was the craft that attracted me the most, but the design side and the creative part turned out to suit me much better. In the second year I made the first version of my Sahara stool. Then I spent almost 8 years, intermittently and with small steps, perfecting the design.”
“After graduating from the HMC, I immediately started my own workshop; that’s where I, most often independently, work on a wide range of products. All my work must have something individual and unique. A cutting edge (figuratively!), or a perfect make but at first glance with something illogical to it. This creates tension and suspense and keeps it exciting.”
