Milano – Certosa Initiative
Looking back at Salone del Mobile 2022 by Gaia Sarini
To be honest, I wouldn’t define myself as a design expert, not at all. I am actually a third-year student at Civica Scuola Altiero Spinelli, a university for interpreting and translating in Milan, and I have always been interested in the design universe. This interest of mine became even greater after studying the Dutch language and culture over these last three years. Indeed, at least according to me, one can’t help but associate the word ‘design’ with The Netherlands, and that is apparent at Milan Design Week 2022, but especially at Certosa Initiative.
Visiting Certosa Initiative, people are fascinated by the beautiful design objects of Orange or Red, who did a surprising material research focusing on rattan & recycled p.e.t.
The same beauty can be found in Orange or Red’s neighbors at the exhibition: Studio AENEAE. Indeed, brother and sister Victor and Erna de Bie are a winning team, whose love for design is as evident as the one they share for their family: they explained to me that AENEAE is actually their mother’s name and the photos of the collection that is showcased at Certosa initiative were taken by their brother, Wiglius de Bie.
Just a few steps away from Victor and Erna, visitors are immersed in the brilliant signature walls & innovative surfaces by Alissa+Nienke, who apply in their work everything they both have learned at Design Academy Eindhoven superbly.
Last but not least, I’ve visited SOM Tales of Perfume, the only workshop at Certosa Initiative 2022. It is a charming sensory experience to reflect on the importance of stillness, especially in the chaotic world all of us inhabit: the perfume is dripped on large quartz stones, so that the scent can rise and fill the room with a fascinating stillness.
