In 2012, designer Harald Dunnink and journalist Rob Wijnberg found out that they shared the same frustrations about the reporting, design and foul ad culture of existing news media. They appeared to have the same ambitions to set up a journalism platform that radiates tranquility. This led to the foundation of De Correspondent.
Momkai is the design studio for innovative digital projects which Harald Dunnink founded in 2002. Momkai was from the beginning involved in De Correspondent: from the naming, the concept, the house style, the campaigns, and the graphical interfaces to the technical realization of the website.
For Harald as a designer, it was especially important that De Correspondent should always offer the reader a context (for instance through side notes and info cards) and at the same time radiate a certain tranquility. A calmness that is ideal for reading and gives journalists the space they need. Committed journalism is all about the narrator – the one who brings a story to life.
There is also the commitment of the readers. De Correspondent, an ad-free medium, has been set up through crowdfunding and knows no subscribers but members.
