


Max Bruinsma is a design critic and editorial designer. Since 1984, his critical writings have featured in art and design journals world-wide. He was editor-in-chief of Eye, the international review of graphic design, in London; Items, the Dutch review of design; and Iridescent, the ICOGRADA peer-reviewed online journal of design research.
Bruinsma published and edited several books on visual culture and graphic design, including monographies on Dick Elffers (1990) and Gert Dumbar (2024). He taught at numerous design schools in the Netherlands and abroad. Since 2017 he is mentor and editor of the yearly NOMIS Awards Film Summer School. In 2005 Max Bruinsma received the Pierre Bayle Prize for design criticism.
