Driven by curiosity and passion towards other cultures, travel, art & design she draws inspiration for her work from travels across Asia, frequently seeking out architectural shapes and grid-like structures. Her work is playful, tactile and colourful.
Marije Hester: “The origin of Color City lies in a project for Beijing Design Week 2017 that focused on the need for public art in the city. The artwork was going to be projected onto buildings all over Beijing and with this in mind I created Color City.”
“Color City is a graphic made to reflect that a 2D surface does not necessarily need to be flat. It argues that every plain wall can be made into a world of its own. The construction makes that you can turn the graphic in every direction and it still works. I have lived in Beijing for three years and I love the city very much. However especially in winter the sea of buildings with their empty walls are grey, cold and dark. The colours I used were meant to bring back fun and positivity.”
