From 13 September till 3 November, Breda will host the 11th edition of the biennial BredaPhoto Festival, the largest photographic exhibition in the Benelux. Side by side with young talents, top photographers will show their views on festival theme Journeys in industrial buildings, churches, residential houses, parks and the rugged development area ’t Zoet.
Dutch Design Daily highlights a number of Dutch participants during the festival period. Today, at the start of the festival, a short introduction.
Journeys is a metaphor for developments in life that can turn everything upside down. Sometimes it is literally a physical journey, in search of a new home and freedom; often it is a psychological or spiritual journey, in search of one’s own identity or a new purpose in life. With these stories, the artists of BredaPhoto want to inspire you, perhaps to find a new way yourself.
For example, Mounir Raji, born and raised in the Zaan region, presents his project Dreamland, an ode to the Morocco of his dreams. With his photographs in the colours of the late summer sun, he evokes memories of a warm reunion with his family, of being able to play outside, and of feelings of freedom, trust, and hope. Iranian-Dutch artist Tina Farifteh‘s project Tina in Sexbierum takes us on a search for a new home in the Frisian village at the Sedyk. The Palestinian-Dutch artist Sakir Khader, brand new winner of the Silver Camera, shows new work that focuses on the life and survival of the inhabitants of war-torn Palestine and in which his personal involvement is intensely felt.
In addition to these and many other professional photographers and artists, BredaPhoto shows the work of young talents who are still studying at an art academy. A visit to the festival offers more than just inspiring exhibitions. In collaboration with various cultural partners, there are theatre and film screenings, artist talks and performances, guided tours, walking and cycling routes, and workshops where you can try your hand at photography.
