(w)aardewerk
Crafts Council Nederland
With (w)aardewerk, Crafts Council Nederland draws attention to urgent issues surrounding the extraction of raw materials in relation to the production of ceramics. Raw materials for clayware come directly from the earth, but due to drought, excavation, a loss of biodiversity, polluting firing processes and cheap mass production, clayware is far from sustainable in today’s day and age.

In (w)aardewerk, makers explore sustainable perspectives and potential futures for ceramics. This presentation during Dutch Design Week is the first encouraging and hopeful step in response to fast ceramics.

Makers: Atelier Max Lipsey, Benedetta Pompili, Kim Blekkenhorst, Lab AIR – Iris de Kievith, Marte Mei, Niek Hoogland, Simone Post, Studio Christine Jetten, Studio Luske, Studio Noff, Studio Rink & Studio Yoon Seok-hyeon.

Tools of Rekindling

Tools of Rekindling
Elena Genesio & Emmie Massias
‘Tools of Rekindling’ centers on the act of harvesting, redefined not only as a method of extraction but as a form of activism that reshapes our relationship with local environments.

The exhibition, Curated by Elena Genesio and Emmie Massias, the exhibition delves into the ethical dilemmas surrounding the mining of natural resources, blurred practices of land management, and shifting value of raw materials in globalised economies.

Encalar, Guillermo Cárdenas

Encalar
Guillermo Cárdenas
As a fading tradition, ENCALAR gathers the voices of the oldest generation of Andalusian limewashers in a polyphonic memorial.

An assemblage of sculptural speakers and a short film memorialise limewashing as a form of domestic labour and a mourning ritual performed by women in rural Andalusia. Their voices echo through the space and intertwine with the journey of limestone—extraction, burning, slaking.

The Future of Craft
Andreea Tron
“Inspired by a sci-fi story I co-wrote with AI, this project is set in a utopian 2204 and delves into craftsmanship, material research, and innovative design. The project presents four physical outfits and two digital works, each representing a unique character from the story.”

Each outfit reflects a narrative linked to the research, from craft to advanced technology. Through these personas, the project highlights serious issues such as sustainable design and circular materials with lightness and humour.

Interfering Perspectives and The Future of Craft by Andreea Tron
Interfering Perspectives

Interfering Perspectives
Emergence Delft
Indifference explores algorithms that appear intelligent, like Google Maps or ChatGPT. These systems, though human-like, don’t truly experience the world as we do. Misunderstanding this can distort our relationship with reality. As AI shapes our worldview, distinguishing between artificial and human intelligence becomes crucial.

Indifference uses Spatial Sound, developed in collaboration with 4DSOUND, to delve into these complexities. Omnidirectional speakers create a space where every spot offers a unique listening experience, unlike traditional setups. This technology allows sound to be positioned anywhere, enabling immersive experiences like hearing a bird fly around you. It projects sound holograms, organizing sound vibrations by dimension, movement, and interaction within space. This invites you to reflect on intelligence beyond its human form, questioning how AI perceives and processes your presence.

Fake Ficton
Fauxbia Collective
Fauxbia Collective, a group of 8 designers critique the line between real and fake through an anthology of projects. Fake Fiction challenges perceptions using sensorial experiences, production methods, and political narratives at Dutch Design Week 2024.

For DDW 2024, Fake Fiction explores fakeness as a conceptual lens to investigate and criticise the new and alternative realities of cultural and material production.
