Design Diorama, London Design Biennale

Het Nieuwe Instituut

Event | Spatial | International

The first edition of the London Design Biennale 2016, which runs up to and including September 27, kicked off on September 2. Representing the Netherlands, Het Nieuwe Instituut has created a contribution. Studio Makkink & Bey was invited to react to the umbrella theme of Utopia.

Studio Makkink & Bey presents the installation ‘Design Diorama: the Archive as a Utopic Environment’. The installation translates the international network of Studio Makkink & Bey into a diorama that is modeled after the ‘Sunday room’, an idealized version of the personal living environment of the studio founders Rianne Makkink and Jurgen Bey.

The installation is an implicit reference to the living and working environment of every designer. An environment which, just as is the case for Makkink & Bey, simultaneously acts as a personal archive of objects by former studio members, interns, designers, artists, architects and private work. In addition, an online publication is published that is an even stronger representation of the Dutch design network.
