From energy material to carnival outfit

FASHIONCLASH, in collaboration with Cultuurmakers Maastricht and CMNE, has launched a unique pilot project that uses Carnival as a creative and accessible way to raise awareness of energy poverty. By transforming residual materials from energy-saving packages into Carnival outfits, accessories, and props, a new way is created to reach residents who have so far found it difficult to connect with existing sustainability schemes.

Many households feel ashamed about energy poverty, and local authorities find it challenging to reach residents using traditional means of communication. As a result, available information and support measures often remain out of reach. This project deliberately opts for a cultural and creative approach: through creating, meeting, and celebrating, it encourages open conversation about energy saving, support, and opportunities at home.

From energy material to carnival outfit
For this pilot project, five local designers were invited to create unique carnival outfits using leftover and waste materials from energy-saving applications, such as heat-resistant foil, insulation strips, and other reused textiles. The designs by Max NiereiselJessie Romkens, Lena Berens, Wievien Alberts & Floris van Lammeren show in an inspiring way what is possible with these materials and form the starting point for awareness and dialogue.

The finished outfits will be exhibited around Carnival time at the Kunstketel in Witte Vrouwenveld (Frankenstraat 140-B Maastricht). This will allow passers-by and local residents to become acquainted with the project and its underlying theme in an accessible way.

Creative workshops for residents
In the week leading up to carnival, craft workshops were held in the neighborhood, where residents got to work with the same materials. Under the guidance of craftspeople, the residents initially set to work creating their own carnival creations, indirectly drawing attention to sustainability and energy conservation. The pilot took place in Witte Vrouwenveld, a neighborhood with a strong network of social and community organizations, including the Klimaathuis, the Trefcentrum, and Trajekt.

Pilot with a view to growth
This first edition has been set up as a small-scale pilot. The experiences gained, designs, and working methods form the basis for possible further development into a larger project in 2027, in which culture and sustainability will be structurally linked.
