Het Huis van Betekenis in the Red Box

We were proud to take part in Dutch Design Week 2025 as part of the Red Box — a space dedicated to exploring equality between women and men. Too often, the reference point in science, design and healthcare remains the white male body. In the Red Box, we asked: what happens when other bodies, stories and perspectives take center stage?

We — Eva Procee, Noor Bronstring and Albert Hennipman from Het Huis van Betekenis (The House of Meaning, Utrecht) — joined this first edition of the Red Box, an initiative by Katja Lucas, Wisse Trooster and Alieke Geerts.

In the morning, we created a visual report of the panel talk at the City Hub, moderated by Anouk van Mil, capturing ideas and emotions in quick lines and color. In the afternoon, we continued our exploration inside the Red Box. Using wax crayon, marker and ecoline in shades of pink, orange, red and purple, we drew on packaging of menstrual products — pads, birth control pills, tampons. By literally drawing on these everyday yet often hidden objects, we gave them new presence and dignity.

Conversations with visitors and exhibitors opened up further reflections on taboos — menstruation, uterine wisdom, and the body as a site of knowledge. The following pages present a drawn record of this first edition of the Red Box at DDW 2025: a search for equality through color, form and dialogue. We believe that drawing helps us to see — and to recognize what has long remained unseen.
