With ‘The Lie Will Be Avenged’, Max Kisman reflects on his Indonesian origins in various media at the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam. The wall hangings ‘Self-determination’ and ‘Origin’, the shadow installation ‘Das Tragische Schicksal des Heldentums’ and the video installation ‘The lie will be avenged’, refer to the knock-on effects of the colonial past, especially when it comes to autonomy and self-determination. For Kisman, the Proklamasi, Sukarno’s proclamation of independence on 17 August 1945, is the ultimate moment of the process towards self-determination.

On the occasion of the two exhibitions, the publication ‘The lie will be avenged / Kuspinah – I only have your name’ is published. Diary drawings, 44 pages, 15x21cm, published bykisman.com.
