Two young photographers, Enzo Visser and Nina Broers, are presenting their work as part of the exhibition Life Stories by BredaPhoto and Pride Photo on view at Clublokaal, Breda.

Enzo Visser – Mezelf door jouw ogen zien
The relationship between Joan and photographer Enzo is at the heart of In Mezelf door jouw ogen zien (Seeing myself through your eyes), a project exploring trust, visibility, and the ethical complexities of portraiture. Throughout their collaboration, Joan shared personal stories, access to his archive, and insights into his life, art, and music — ultimately entrusting Enzo with his image.

Among a series of conventional portraits, one image stood out: a quiet moment with Joan’s eyes closed and mouth slightly open. Enzo hesitated to show this portrait, unsure if Joan would recognize himself in it. When he did, Joan responded with: Beauty for people is beauty, beauty for a photographer is sometimes also light.”

This moment raised questions of representation, consent, and vulnerability. How do you repay someone who allows themselves to be seen? How do you balance capturing their essence while challenging their comfort zone?

About Enzo Visser
Enzo Visser (he/him) is a Dutch photographer currently studying at the KABK (NL). His practice explores themes of identity and sexuality through self-portraiture and staged imagery. Drawing inspiration from the legacy of Dutch photographers and filmmakers, Enzo delves into male vulnerability, often examining absence as a central theme.

Nina Broers – The Garden to Disappear In
The Garden to Disappear In is a reimagining of Maria’s childhood — shaped by both memory and invention. At its core is Maria, a figure who remains unrecognizable yet radiant, both obscured and illuminated. She exists in a space between anonymity and transcendence, embodying the fluidity of identity and the freedom of self-expression.

Accompanying newly produced images are collages composed of archival photographs of Maria. The result is a fragmented portrait that examines the tension between elements that are remembered and those that are reinvented.

At the heart of this work lies the garden. In this natural space, Maria’s journey unfolds, free from the constraints of gender norms and societal expectations. The garden becomes a place where identity is not owned, but allowed to grow, change, and evolve. In this way, identity, like a garden, is constantly in bloom — a space for growth, a space for becoming.

About Nina Broers
Nina Broers (she/her) is a Dutch filmmaker and photographer, and a recent graduate of the Sint Joost Academie, Breda. Drawing from her own perspective as a woman, Broers explores how invisible forces influence our daily lives and perceptions. Her work examines the complex dynamics of societal power structures.
