We Like Art is showing the intriguing installation ‘Painted Books’ (2023), consisting of a collection of 20 painted wooden objects, during the special art fair Art Island.
Gijs Frieling and Job Wouters painted their favorite titles; from The Book of Miracles to Nader Tot U by Gerard Reve; from Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer to Donald Judd, Complete Writings 1959-1975. An eclectic book club in exciting design, typography and color.
The FreelingWaters duo consists of Gijs Frieling – known for his large-scale murals that fuse decorative painting, folk art traditions and religious iconography – and Job Wouters a practitioner of the lost art of psychedelic and frenzied handwriting, known for his rampant alphabet experiments.
FreelingWaters operates between illustration, painting, graphic design and furniture design. Work by FreelingWaters has been shown at venues including Future Perfect, New York, Depot Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, and the Wrong Shop, London. They have also collaborated with fashion brands Lemaire and Dries van Noten.
The artists work with pigments and casein glue – a fast-drying medium derived from milk protein. The technique, used for thousands of years, guarantees unparalleled color intensity and durability. Because of the fast-drying nature of the paint, there is no room for mistakes or retouching, no trial and error. “To paint is to surrender to the movements of your hands,” say the artists.
