Esmee Gruson, graduated from the HKU in Utrecht in 2023, explores in this project the boundaries of functionality and surprises her audience with her artistic approach to everyday objects. Take a paperclip, an object that is familiar to all of us. By experimenting with enlargement and deform, she explores how usability and the discomfort of the unknown effect us.
Due to its recognisability and alienation, Esmee’s work has the ability to evoke joy, amazement and confusion in the viewer.
Paperclip is made of steel, a hard and cold material designed in an elegant and simplistic shape. It is made by hand and finished with a powder coat.
Paperclip was on show during OBJECT Rotterdam 2024.
