ONE WEEK ABOUT Social Design by curator Social label
A beautiful example of collaboration, social design and co-creation on a large scale for the rental market. Quite amazing that it has been achieved by abiding to all the rules and statutory regulations. The residents are proud of their own contribution. The 402 residences of SPACE-S on Strijp-S in Eindhoven are completed! And that’s really extraordinary. After 5 years of brainstorming, developing, designing and completing, with 4.662 fans on Facebook and well over 1.000 participants. Everyone is extremely proud, so it’s time for a final completion celebration. And, as usual at SPACE-S, the residents organized the party themselves, together with Woonbedrijf and Stam + de Koning. SPACE-S is the quintessence of customer-driven work. Future residents developed their ideal neighborhood on Strijp-S together with Woonbedrijf and Vestide. More than 1.000 people determined the DNA together, the layout of the outdoor area, the design of the buildings and homes and the way of living together.
Online and offline, during meetings, inspirational sessions, via Facebook and on their own initiative, residents inspired one another and gave shape to the final design. That rendered a special neighborhood of their own, which is now really of and for the residents. The development and construction of SPACE-S did not take any longer than usual. The planning can be compared to a regular construction process and also the construction costs are equivalent. Developing and building with residents is therefore not a risk, it’s actually a festivity! Residents designed SPACE-S; at the end of 2012 SPACE-S started with an empty construction site and an appeal on Facebook and in the ED: “In what way would you like to live here?”
SPACE-S always took the way in which residents would like to live together and what that means for the spaces as a starting point. By taking the wishes of the customer as a guiding factor, there are now nice housing and living areas for various target groups: families, students, singles and couples, people who need sheltered accommodation, and (starting) entrepreneurs.
