ONE WEEK ABOUT Dutch Designers in Milan by Connecting the Dots in cooperation with Civica Scuola Interpreti e Traduttori ‘Altiero Spinelli’Table of Babel at the Civica

Yesterday morning, Civica Scuola Interpreti e Traduttori ‘Altiero Spinelli’ in Milan welcomed about 50 designers from all over the world who will exhibit their work in the school’s spacious classrooms during the Salone del Mobile. The students met their assigned designers, helped them install their stands and got to know their creative processes, inspirations and ideas.

In the evening, the school hosted a candle-lit dinner party organised by Connecting the Dots, which officially marked the beginning of the collaboration between the Civica and the designers. Dashing Dutch chef Martin Mansoor and sous-chef Djoeke Geijs served an exciting parade of courses that, along with the beer and red wine, lighted up the atmosphere and the already ebullient chitter-chatter. Chef Martin explained that his food drew inspiration from the internationality of Salone del Mobile, from the new kitchen design by Ottolenghi and from the many cultures and languages studied by the school’s students.

Italy’s astonishingly diverse flavours dominated the appetizers with prosciutto, asparagus, Parmigiano and soft bread dipped in Pesto sauce. A warm potato and pumpkin soup, aromatised with parsley and ginger, offered a familiar taste to the Northern European guests. The crisp, zesty freshness of spring embraced the subtle sweetness of Northern African cuisine in the chef’s creamy risotto with a side of pomegranate, purple broccoli salad and coconut milk carrots and string beans. The dessert was an homage to the school setting, featuring sponge cake garnished with kiwi, crème fraîche and mint leaves. “I wanted to create a Tower of Babel with my dishes,” said Mansoor. And with German, Dutch, Italian and other languages resonating through the hallways, Babel it was indeed.
