A series of stories about the cultural peat landscape near Veenhuizen, which traverse the bogs of Fochteloërveen and follow in the footsteps of colonists of years past.

The map shows one cycling, and two hiking routes. Upon scanning the QR codes you will be able to listen to a location specific excerpt of the Veenvertelling. The story can also be read in its entirety on the printed map.

The Fochteloërveen is one of the last remaining raised bog regions in the Netherlands. Because of its unique natural features, the Fochteloërveen is part of the European Natura 2000 network, a status that comes with an obligation to preserve and protect this vulnerable natural habitat. Central to Veenvertellingen are the stories, past and present, of the relationship between people and landscape and the challenges this presents.

The brief called for the biking and walking map to be more than just a route description. Landscape images expand and compress like shifting views during a hike. The arrangement of repeating images in modular proportions refers to the grid-based layout of the historic Veenhuizen colony. The map itself is rendered in 5 pantone colors, the peat landscape is printed in gold.
