Long Read | Team Thursday

Team Thursday is a graphic design studio set up by Loes van Esch and Simone Trum, based in Rotterdam. They focus on the design of visual identities, books and spatial objects.

They do so with a special interest for typography, a curiousness for materials and the possible performativity of an object. Looking for patterns in everything and all around them, they search for how they can transform these into designs. Next to that they irregularly give workshops (inter)nationally, teach Typography at ArtEZ Arnhem, and host exhibitions in the front part of their studiospace, TTHQ.

The past period they have been working simultaneously on larger scale spatial installations and editorial publications. A peek of what just has been finished.

3 Second drive by | exhibition 3sec.gallery
The exhibition in the 3sec.gallery just opened: the worlds only drive-by gallery in the parking garage of the Chassé Theater Breda. The posters show some of the first results of a tile type tool we’re currently developing with Janine Zielman. The exhibition is up until mid September. Organised by Graphic Matters.

Stedelijk Museum A–Z | collection catalogue
Team Thursday recently designed the collection catalogue of the Stedelijk Museum, showing more than 130 well-known and lesser-known works from the collection. The makers are organized alphabetically by their first names, ranging from Agus Djaya to Zanele Muholi. They combined all versions of the typeface Union SMA, that were developed for the museum for different occasions, to underline the large variety of the content.

V Holland Festival | krantencover
Last month Team Thursday designed the cover of the Volkskrant cultural supplement about Holland Festival. They made their own typographic version of a test image. It’s made with the tile type tool as well; they are currently exploring the possibilities and it’s so cool to see it directly translated in print.

Thomas Trum for Porsche | new publication
Team Thursday made a follow-up of the book Daily Spins by Thomas Trum, for Porsche. It shows new work and the process of making. They sprayed their covers with Thomas in the south of France, resulting in 600 different books, with 3 layers of paint each. Printed by rob stolk.

Tijd Toren | spatial installation
Time’s up for the Tijd Toren (Time Tower), next to Huis Sonneveld in Rotterdam. This temporary intervention and exhibition was part of Rotterdam Architecture Month and designed by Alexandra Sonnemans. The exhibition inside showed the history of the area around Huis Sonneveld and was curated by OMI Rotterdam.

The pattern on the facade echoes the curtains in the kitchen and serving room of Huis Sonneveld, designed in 1930 by Elise Djo-Bourgeois.

SIT SIT DANCE DANCE | spatial design Melly
Together with architect Atelier Tomas Dirrix and artist Koen Taselaar Team Thursday was asked to re-design the ground space of Kunstinstituut Melly in Rotterdam. The space functions as bookshop, small cafe and event space all in one. They dipped their toes into each others professions and collectively designed and produced a set of dancing furnitures, tilted bookcases, patterned pillows, an inside billboard and a poster set as wallpaper. This will be the last summer that it’s showcased. With many thanks to Phil Procter for his stainless steel wisdom.
