TENSION — lighting object defined by balance and gravity

TENSION is a lighting object in which structure is reduced to a minimum. A single tensioned wire carries both the load and the light, creating a quiet tension between floor and ceiling. Rather than concealing its construction, TENSION makes gravity and balance visible, turning a technical necessity into the core of the design.

The object explores the boundary between functional lighting and spatial intervention. By relying on tension instead of mass, the lamp occupies space with minimal physical presence while asserting a clear vertical line within the interior. Light is not suspended from a fixture but integrated into the same system that holds the object in place.

While the underlying principle remains constant, variations in color and material allow TENSION to shift in character, from restrained and architectural to more expressive and graphic. Each configuration follows the same logic: one wire, one force, one line.

Product designer Bob Frederik makes furniture and light objects. With his experimental approach he focuses on innovation, function and simplicity. This results in minimalistic, playful, and timeless designs.
