The Muddy Collection

Rink Schelling

Product | DDD Countryside | Material | Research

Rink is a young ceramic artist with roots in Zeeland. Her ongoing research into Zeeland clay led to the creation of ‘The Muddy Collection.’ Her collection is based on a great curiosity about the possibilities of unfiltered clay from the Zeeland polders.

Fascinated by the unpredictability of nature, Rink explored unfiltered clay as a base material and developed a series of objects. The objects reveal the diversity of the Zeeland soil; each polder contains unique clay. Twigs, sand, leaves, roots, and other organic materials determine the colors and textures. The material itself guides the creation process, resulting in a distinctive collection where craftsmanship, design, and nature merge. Rink uses the richness of the Dutch soil to present a counterimage to polished and industrialized products.

This material research resulted in a collection of organically shaped ceramic objects. Her work is an ode to the natural beauty and diversity of the Zeeland polders, emphasizing the unique properties of unfiltered clay. Rink demonstrates through her work how the purity and raw aesthetics of nature can play a prominent role in contemporary ceramic design.
