Somehow the design world has handled the digital transition poorly. No of course there are all kinds of fantastic agencies that have made the digital world their playing field. But an essential feature that has brought design this far has been neglected. And that is the design debate.

I prefer not to lose myself in nostalgic talk about how nice and inspiring the world once was with busy lectures, a flood of publications and, above all, the existence of lively design magazines. Because let’s face it, those days are never coming back. But in the digital world with all its possibilities, I still miss the platform where discussions take place.

Cynical colleagues sometimes suggest that the debate no longer exists, the young generation wouldn’t want it, and no one would be able to write a decent text anymore. I don’t believe all that much, rather we are missing a platform, from which the entire design world in its vast multiformity feels something of a community.

With the launch of Dutch Design Daily, for the first time in a long time, I see that community taking centre stage. Not primarily driven by commerce or as an advocate of the profession, but by the power and significance of design itself, Dutch Design Daily is already an indispensable place for knowledge and for networking.

I would like to address everyone who is part of this and belongs here. This is our chance, it’s up to us to further develop this unique platform and make it a success. Dutch Design Daily is finally here!
