Kossmanndejong designs urban forum for all animals and plants in the city

On April 14, the Amsterdam-Almere pavilion opened The Voice of Urban Nature at Floriade Expo 2022. The metropolitan area of Amsterdam and Almere has trillions of inhabitants: people, animals, plants, trees and microbes. How can we organize our cities in such a way that it provides the necessities of life for all these inhabitants? In The Voice of Urban Nature, everyone gets a voice in a living garden full of encounters. Overtreders W, the Onkruidenier, Joost Emmerik and Kossmanndejong jointly designed The Voice of Urban Nature. The pavilion, the garden and the exhibition were designed as one integrated spatial and layered narrative. The buildings, nature and story of the pavilion are one.

Cities are seeing more and more building and living, while heat stress and climate change continue to add to the pressure. All kinds of nature initiatives in the city are campaigning against these changes. Illustrator Paul Faassen made humorous portraits that depict the cohabitation of all these residents of Amsterdam and Almere. Visitors wander through six themed gardens, each with surprising perspectives. Audio encounters with inspiring people and non-people from Amsterdam and Almere show how you too can commit to a nature-inclusive future. From nature optimists, city tree planters and material choreographers to a small boy searching for herbs among paving stones: they all make the city a little greener. Their enthusiasm is contagious and challenges you to contribute too.
