New roads to reuse
With an annual collection of 2.8 million kg of goods, Foundation Kringloopbedrijf Het Warenhuis in Leiden is one of the largest in the Netherlands. Designers Jurgen Bey, Nienke Hoogvliet, Max Lipsey and Fraser McPhee are invited to investigate one of the waste streams that are not sold or recycled. Their product will be produced in the social workshops of the recycling company. Today we show the design of Nienke Hoogvliet.

Nienke Hoogvliet focused on natural materials such as wool and cotton. A large part of the so-called kitchen textiles that enter the recycling company – the textiles other than clothing, such as blankets, tablecloths and towels – go into the dumpster unseen. There is too much coming in, people may not find it hygienic and for example new towels are so cheap that this simply does not sell. While they are beautiful natural fabrics that are still very useful. Nienke uses these materials as a new raw material and has designed a beautiful and stimulating piece of furniture. The tactile quality of the fabrics is emphasized and is fully reflected in the design. While the use of these specific substances surprises us and makes us think.
