Hotel room with textile walls shaped by the wind

Fashion designer and artist Antoine Peters’ latest creation is a room in Hotel Modez in Arnhem. This remarkable space offers guests an enchanting environment where all the walls and ceiling seem to breathe and move with the wind.

In his studio, Peters recreated the walls and ceiling of the room at Modez to scale. He then created a patchwork for each wall, using lightweight materials typically used for kites and parachutes. With a wind machine, he brought the textiles to life, using the natural movement of the wind to give the fabric an organic shape that transforms the space.

For Peters, the use of real wind was crucial to allow chance to play a role, giving the folds an organic, unpredictable dimension. The hotel room is a vibrant composition of movement, form, and texture, with the waves in the fabric accentuated by seams and stripe patterns.

A Moving Curtain
“It’s magical to see a curtain move in the breeze, to see a pleated skirt come to life with a pirouette, or to watch a flag flutter,” says Peters. “I’ve translated this in my own way into the room while also playing with contrasts like matte, shiny, light, heavy, transparency, colors, and the room itself.”

The hotel room is a celebration of the space surrounding clothing and the human body, a theme central to Peters’ work. Known for his bold and boundary-pushing designs, ranging from extravagant fashion objects to meditative textile artworks, including an impressive landscape of sleeves and jeans stretching over 240 meters, or his tranquil ‘soft dots’ – meditative, abstract, color-based wall art.
