Joost Swarte honorary member BNO

Graphic | Heritage | Illustration

On February 21, 2018, BNO, the Organization of Dutch Designers has decided to appoint Joost Swarte honorary member of BNO because of his merits for the design profession.

Joost Swarte is a multi-design talent: graphic designer, cartoonist, industrial designer and architect. After an interrupted industrial design course in Eindhoven, Swarte began making comics and graphic works at the end of the turbulent 1960s. In addition to drawings, he also designed post stamps, postcards, LP and CD covers and illustrations for reputable magazines such as Vrij Nederland, Humo and The New Yorker. He also designs furniture and homes. In cooperation with Mecanoo Architects, he developed the design for De Toneelschuur in Haarlem.

Joost Swarte is known first and foremost for his illustrations, but his activities are versatile and contribute greatly to the development of the profession: for example, he set up magazines about comics, he was the initiator of the Haarlem Comic days and he was involved in the Illustration Biennale. He is a visiting lecturer in various countries and he taught on practically all art schools in the Netherlands. Many image creators did their internship with him.

BNO and the honorary membership
BNO connects and represents a unique diversity of professional designers and design agencies in the Netherlands and contributes in many ways to the development of designers and their profession. BNO has honorary members: people who because of their great merits for the profession and/or the Association are appointed honorary members. This is above all to pay tribute; the honorary members serve as icons and ambassadors for the design profession.

As a great professional with an impressive versatility and production, Joost Swarte belongs to the impressive parade of honorary members that the BNO already knows, including people such as Wim Crouwel, Friso Kramer, Paul Mijksenaar and Renny Ramakers.
