De Bijenkorf – ‘the Harrods of Holland’ – decided to create an artist-in-residence project in the small tower atop its historical 100-year-old building on Dam Square, Amsterdam. Creative studio Part of a Bigger Plan were charged with coming up with the branding, identity and an introductory film.

The first task was to come up with a name – Room On The Roof – followed by an offbeat room service menu whose items include Dutch cheese, a personal opera singer, an electric Wurlitzer piano and a pair of binoculars. PoaBP also designed the logo, website and other branded products. The tower’s interior is an installation designed by i29 interior architects.

On 27 January, the first guest – Dutch designer Maarten Baas – has taken up residence. The project, in collaboration with Rijkmuseum Amsterdam, is open to national and international artists, writers, musicians, architects and designers.

Part of a Bigger Plan was founded in 2011 by art director, designer, illustrator and film maker Christian Borstlap, known for his work for Wallpaper magazine and advertising agencies such as FHV/BBDO and KesselsKramer.
