On April 27, 2026, Buro Bend will launch the W.A. van Buren banknote. A project that combines design, high-quality printing techniques, and premium materials. The project was created to celebrate National King’s Day in Dokkum.

The banknote translates and tells the story of the Elfstedentocht of 1986, which the King completed under the pseudonym W.A. van Buren. Forty years later, he returns to Dokkum, the turning point of the route, as King.

The design is built as a layered visual narrative, combining typography, illustration and symbolism. Elements from Frisian visual language, such as the pompeblêden, are translated into rhythmic patterns that give the banknote structure and identity. The composition connects past and present within a single image, where detail and meaning reinforce each other. At its core, the design reflects a story of development and character. The banknote shows the transformation from a young prince to the king of today, connecting two moments in time and illustrating how perseverance and experience have shaped him.

The banknote was produced in collaboration with Royal Joh. Enschedé, specialists in security printing. It incorporates refined printing techniques such as intaglio printing, holographic elements and UV ink with hidden details that only appear under different light.

The banknote is presented in a carefully designed box that both protects and showcases the object. Techniques such as embossing and foil stamping give it a tactile and refined appearance. The packaging was produced by Speciaaldrukkerij Douma.

The edition is limited to 1,986 pieces and is available via wavanburen.nl.
