ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curator Patrick Aarts Sen (BNO). Over the next few days, we show the Drivers of 2025, Coen Beeksma is one of them.

As a multidisciplinary designer with a background in engineering and project management, I combine aesthetics with technical expertise. From my studio, I work on high-end interiors, furniture and objects, either independently or in close collaboration with architects and designers. I manage projects from the initial sketch to delivery.

My strength lies in connecting design and realisation, not as separate steps but as one continuous process.

For my own designs, I consciously draw on my technical background as an engineer to reinforce my artistic vision. This technical expertise enables me to understand not only how furniture should look, but also how it should function, hold up and age over decades of use. Each project begins with in-depth technical and theoretical research, focusing on proportions, durability and ergonomics.

My approach focuses on applying classic woodworking techniques within modern design concepts. I believe that the knowledge embedded in traditional craftsmanship and wood joints offers unrivalled strength and durability. By combining these timeless techniques with contemporary aesthetics and functionality, I create a distinctive fusion that results in designs that will last for generations.

Driving Dutch Design programme
The programme highlighted what I am doing well and what I could improve on. It also gave me confidence in myself as a designer. Each lecturer added a new layer of depth to the ins and outs of the design sector. It also challenges you to expand your network and get to know new people with whom you might be able to take the next step. Or to whom you yourself can contribute something. With all these tools, you get a clear picture of the necessary next steps and the confidence to take them.

Driving Dutch Design
Driving Dutch Design is the professionalisation and networking programme of the Dutch design sector that helps driven designers get started in the world of creative entrepreneurship. Besides Design your business and Design your identityfor startups, in 2025 there is also DDD Next Level for mid-career designers.

The organisation is in the hands of the BNO and the programme is supported by Stichting Stokroos and the Cultuurfonds, thanks in part to the Ahrend Fonds.
