ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curators Patrick Aarts Sen (BNO) and Katja Lucas (DDF). Over the next few days, we show the Drivers of 2024. Today Savine Schoorl of Studio Savine.

The work of Studio Savine centres around unconventional materials like discarded hair and hair extensions. We spend so much time and money taking care of our hair. Yet when we visit a hairdresser, we leave it useless on the floor. Focusing on the transition from appreciating our hair to deeming it as waste, project ‘Haar Haar’ reveals hair as a valuable resource and provides people the opportunity to encounter the qualities of their wasted hair in its second life.

Through material research and skilled craftsmanship, Savine uncovers its hidden potential and creates responsible design practices, showcasing its beauty. By combining the value of discarded hair with innovative design, her work emphasises sustainability and the potential of overlooked resources, inviting people to rethink their perception of waste and appreciate the beauty in transformation.

With Driving Dutch Design, I also learn not to overlook the importance of a sustainable, professionalized design practice, as well as the strength of its creative and knowledgeable community.

Driving Dutch Design is the professionalisation and networking programme of Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers (BNO), Dutch Design Foundation (DDF) and Stichting Stokroos that helps talented designers get started in the world of entrepreneurship.
