Likeness – Caspar Berger

Visual artist Caspar Berger makes art in which current events and the art historical canon play an important role. In it, the self-portrait and his own body are often the starting point for encompassing themes such as freedom, mortality and political (belief) systems.

Evenbeeld (Likeness) consists of four parts: Skin, Skeleton, Universe and Spirit. Caspar and his partner Annick Vroom gave Beukers Scholma the idea of making four books. They liked that idea but also wanted to make a monumental book and saw the solution rather in one solid and monumental collected work. After all, they were looking for a nice connection to Caspar Berger’s work: grand, monumental. By using different paper thicknesses – each volume starts with 250-gram paper – the user feels where a new “book” begins.

Monumentality they also brought to the cover by working with the team to choose a title consisting of one word: Evenbeeld. A strong word that refers to the self-portrait and one’s own body. The image on the front – a strong cutout from the work Narcissus / Self-portrait 15 – once again powerfully depicts the title. On the right one can see a three-mensioned self-portrait of Caspar Berger, on the left one can see its contrame. The image is printed on black paper in two shades of silver. Not coincidentally because silver is traditionally used in mirrors. The title is applied in contrasting white foil print.

This publication appeared simultaneously with Caspar Bergers’ retrospective exhibition “Inner Voice” at the Fundació NUMA – Espais de Cultura, Ciutadella, Menorca, Spain.
