Ornithology

By 30-03-2017

Most beautiful book from all over the world 2017
Earlier this month, the book Ornithology by Anne Geene & Arjan de Nooy was voted one of the ‘Best Dutch Book Designs’, after which it was nominated (along with 600 other books from 32 countries) for the international jury of ‘Schönste Bücher aus aller Welt’. The book design by Jeremy Jansen received the highest award of this prestigious contest, the Golden Letter.

Ornithology is a collection of images of birds in their many facets, categorically arranged by chapter. The book design is characterized by an excellent balance between variety and simplicity. Layout and paper type of each chapter have been chosen with love and attention. The soft, thin paper of the chapter ‘In Flight’, for example, flutters just as lightly as the images of flying birds that have been scattered playfully across the pages.

The reader automatically ends up in the role of a birdwatcher. In the historical introduction of the book on the other hand, birds are presented in a static context on robust, gritty paper. The differences are sometimes so subtle that they are not immediately visible, yet always tangible. The coherence between the chapters is achieved through the consistent choices with regard to grid, one letter and font size. Herein the designer is uncompromising, which creates a controlled diversity.

Jeremy Jansen has a graphic design studio in Amsterdam and works primarily with artists and cultural institutions. In addition to book design, his studio is active in the field of spatial design/graphic exhibition design and corporate identities, including recently the graphic identity of De School and the Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam (Resistance Museum, Amsterdam). In addition, Jeremy is a lecturer at the Graphic Design Department of ArtEZ in Arnhem.
