Cutting Edge Shelving

By 15-12-2018

Martijn Rigters is a Dutch designer based in London and Vienna, holding a bachelor’s degree from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, and a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in London. Combining design research with experimental product design, he pursues alternative forms of present production and future practice.

‘Cutting Edge’ is an installation to create a variety of objects based on the process of hot-wire cutting. From the idea of seeing movement as liquid form, a large-scale cutting machine was built to capture the movements of the maker and directly create a permanent pattern and shape.

The Cutting Edge Shelving process utilises both the positive and negative (off-cut) forms. Inherent to the making process, the shelves create a seamless fit with the main body, creating a high level of precision as well as a stronger joint.
