Project Rotterdam – Sabine Marcelis

By 19-05-2016

The group manifestation Project Rotterdam in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen introduces a new generation of makers. More than twenty artists and designers show new work, installations and interventions in the museum. The artistic developments in present-day Rotterdam are shown through a diversity of oeuvres, statements and positions.

Sabine Marcelis designs with light and color. By changing the color of materials and adjusting reflection or transparency, she manages to manipulate the aesthetic experience. In 2011, after graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven, she starts Studio Sabine Marcelis and develops materials and objects for the world of fashion and architecture. In doing so, she collaborates with both industrial specialists and artisans. With her aesthetic views, Marcelis interferes intensely with the production processes, enabling herself to modify the material properties and create surprising visual effects.

In her own work she examines these material properties like a modern alchemist. The series ‘Dawn’ is inspired by the early hours of the morning: dawn, the time of day when all hues of color break out in revolt. By combining a white neon tube with colored cast resin, Marcelis highlights the subtle exchange between light and color.
