DesignChewing Festival

By 15-11-2019

In the weekend of November 15, 16 and 17 the DesignChewing Festival takes place in TENT, Witte de Withstraat 50 Rotterdam. Designchewing is a design festival consisting of several dozen meetings about reflection and criticism in design. This makes it different from common design festivals, where usually a lot of new work is shown.

Designchewing is initiated ‘for and by designers’. The festival wants to strike up special encounters between visitors and colleagues and the organization promises ironically that it is ‘guaranteed without any upcoming talent’. To reinforce this ambition, beamer presentations are avoided at the festival. One of the organizers, Lucas Verweij, says: “Designchewing is beamerless to get more opportunity to look each other straight in the eye. We didn’t want any frontal education anymore and we are using formats in which visitors are challenged to participate actively and exchange experiences and expertise. Designchewing asks participants to share what they are chewing on, to get to know each other and to enter into dialogue with each other.”

Students of the KABK Academy (Royal Academy of Fine Arts, The Hague) and the WdK Academy (Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam) provide interventions that stimulate interactions between the audiences. There is also a ‘design pub quiz’ during which groups of design connoisseurs compete against each other to become the winner. There are activist speeches, an oracle that visitors can consult about box-relevant questions, a cinematic city walk, and inspiring designer’s talks. On Friday night, Dutch best-known graphic designer Irma Boom speaks, and on Sunday it is ‘what design can do’ – initiator Richard van der Laken’s turn. And you can also come across: fashion designer Marga Weimans, food designer Chloe Rutzerveld, photographer Marwan Magroun, Mieke Gerritzen, Alice Twemlow, Dach & Zephir, Yassine Salahine and Bruno Ninaber.

On Saturday evening, the Pruys-Bekaert Designschrijversprijs (Designwriters Prize) is awarded; during this event three design nominees and three architecture nominees will present their texts live on the stage.

Everyone is welcome. Tickets (€5,-or Museumjaarkaart) at the door at Tent Rotterdam.
