Dog and Pony winner AIGA 50 books | 50 covers

By 07-07-2023

The American Institute for Graphic Arts (AIGA) announced that the cover design for the title Profane Verlichting by Amsterdam-based design firm Dog and Pony is among the best 50 covers of 2022.

The design was selected from nearly 500 entries from 27 countries. The jury judged the designs on the integrated design approach of each work, including concept, innovation and visual elements such as typography, illustration and/or information design.

For the design of poetry collection Profane Verlichting by author Johannes van der Sluis, published by Lebowski Publishers, Dog and Pony took a distinctly graficial approach.

From the jury report
“The bright yellow visualises hot sweltering summer days. Silver rays of light are transformed by the poet’s surreal point of view. A minimalist but strikingly colourful result” Jury AIGA 50 Books / 50 covers 2022

The authoritative design institute AIGA has been awarding the world’s best 50 book designs since 1923. In doing so, AIGA promotes quality and powerful design in a conventional but still much-loved expression: the book. As the focus became increasingly on design for book covers as well, the competition evolved into its current form: 50 Books | 50 Covers.

The winning 2022 selection will be included in the AIGA Design Archives – a permanent historical collection of notable graphic design – and in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University in New York.
