Driving Dutch Design – Julia Janssen

By 12-08-2020

ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curators Patrick Aarts Sen (BNO) and Katja Lucas (DDF)

Driving Dutch Design (DDD) is a program of ABN AMRO, Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers (BNO) and Dutch Design Foundation that helps talented designers get started in the world of entrepreneurship. Julia Janssen is one of them.

Fair data ownership
“I agree with the terms,” “Click here to continue.” A click on ‘accept’ comes in many variations – and we thoughtlessly click. But what do we permit?

Julia Janssen researches the impact of digitalization on our society – mainly focussed on data ownership. She takes her audience on a journey behind the surface of the Internet. The online universe has a lot to offer. But what price do we pay for access? Because nothing is for free, also in cyberspace. When it seems to be free, then you are the product.

As a designer and artist, Julia develops innovative yet accessible perspectives on the complex world of information technology. She creates interaction with the audience and her work offers room for interpretation. Janssen makes people – from ordinary citizens to politicians – think about the function of privacy, the value of data, the importance of digital sovereignty, and the future of online identity.

What started as a fascination became a career. With driving Dutch Design, she works on the professionalization of Studio Julia Janssen and to sharpen her vision. Making the right choices at the right time focus on goals, and set priorities. Creating a movement towards fair data ownership.
