Driving Dutch Design – Nino Basilashvili

By 22-08-2023

ONE WEEK ABOUT Driving Dutch Design by curators Patrick Aarts Sen (BNO) and Katja Lucas (DDF)

Driving Dutch Design is the professionalisation and networking programme of Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers (BNO), Dutch Design Foundation (DDF) and Stichting Stokroos that helps talented designers get started in the world of entrepreneurship. Over the next few days, we show the Drivers of 2023, Nino Basilashvili is one of them.

Nino Basilashvili creates interactive installations through which she allows people to experience a deep sense of connection. Her installations take the form of performances in which collectivity and new media play an essential role.

For Nino, the search for connection is a common thread in her life and the reason for developing new work. At the age of three, she fled with her parents from Georgia to the Netherlands. This uprooting resulted in a search and later brought her the realisation that a sense of connection is always connected to oneself and the natural environment. Her vision is of a connected society that focuses on its similarities rather than its differences.

She often uses biofeedback in her installations. Biofeedback is the awareness and manipulation of physiological functions of the body using electronic or other instruments. For example in installation HEARTSYNC that was on show during Studio DRIFT’s tour at Amsterdam Carré and later at Poppodium De Effenaar uses heart rate data to measure and stimulate heart rate synchronisation in a group.
