Dutch Satellite 2023_Matter

By 17-04-2023

Matter’ is the title of the fifth Dutch Pavilion at the SaloneSatellite organised by the Embassy and Consulate General of the Netherlands in Italy. This initiative promotes the talent of Dutch design in Milan during the most important international trade fair and creates connections between professionals from all over the world. Claire Chérigié, Tim Couwenberg, Albert Potgieter, and the Envisions design collective are the four participants of Dutch Satellite 2023, chosen by the jury to represent the Netherlands.

The themes that the pavilion explores through the works concern the search for innovative materials and alternative solutions related to sustainability, social inclusion, and education, starting from revisiting traditional techniques and materials. The meaning of Dutch Satellite 2023 lies in the noun chosen together by the participants as the subtitle of the presentation, ‘Matter’. Matter means many things: it implies substance, object, or fact, it means to question, problem, but also theme, or argument.

Envisions | Rē
Envisions presents Rē, a project developed by a group of its members: Ann-Kathrin Eisenbarth, Anna Resei, Frederik Deschuytter, Julio Gutierrez Jr, Michael Wolf, and Sanne Schuurman. It is a collection of interior fabrics created by mixing unsorted textile waste with pure virgin wool, using a digital design method. Rē represents a synthesis between two of the most topical themes of design today: attention to sustainability and the fascination for the possibilities that the digital medium introduces. envisions.nl

Tim Couwenberg| Austral
Tim Couwenberg, who is also interested in developing innovative materials. Tim presents the collection of multifunctional sustainable biomaterials, Austral. Created by mixing organic residues of various kinds, this material is biodegradable and non-toxic, its production has a low impact and can be widely used in both the design and fashion fields. It is a material that, depending on the density with which it is produced, can become a fabric and give life to a seating element. timcouwenberg.com

Claire Chérigié | Dawn to Dusk
With her work, Claire Chérigié, a French graduate of the Design Academy in Eindhoven, takes us to another area. That of interactive design, a world on the crossover with art, where, through direct experience, the public is pushed to reflect on the social and human experience of the individual, and on his perception of reality. The work at Satellite is called ‘Dawn to Duskand suggests our relationship, more or less conscious, with time and the perception we have of it. clairecherigie.com

Albert Potgieter | wooden furniture
Finally, Albert Potgieter, who grew up in South Africa, and who after studying physiotherapy, entered the world of furniture production by developing an artisanal technique entirely his own, derived from in-depth knowledge of the human body and the laws that govern it. His wooden furniture: chairs, tables, and stools are mainly inspired by natural elements: the ripples created by the wind on the water, the branches of a tree, the colors of a mountain, the legacy of a childhood spent immersed in the mighty African nature.  albertpotgieter.com
