I Defend Rights

By 20-01-2022

Exhibition that appeals to the senses to touch visitors with stories of human rights defenders.

All over the world, human rights activists risk their lives for the freedom and equality of other people. After all, respect for human rights is not nearly as self-evident as we would like. I Defend Rights lets listeners experience the setbacks and threats that human rights defenders face every day. They defend human rights and have powerful, penetrating stories to tell. We let them hear them. So that you can take their stories to heart and help spread their important message.

Moving stories
The core of the exhibition is an interactive installation presenting a selection of five stories of human rights defenders from the Memria platform. This digital archive consists of a huge amount of raw audio material. The chosen stories highlight both the defenders’ motivations and their daily difficulties. The exhibition extends the oral tradition of storytelling and turns it into an inviting, physical experience in which the sharing of insights and emotions is central.

A physical experience
After a short introduction, visitors are invited to interact with five thematic audio stories through hats. The journey begins when visitors take a seat on a stool and activate a sensor. Speakers are integrated in each hat through which the audio is played. The experience of the story is determined by the shape and position of the hat – and by the screens that isolate visitors from each other in the room while they listen to the stories.
